Business intelligence team is a South London research asset
19 April 2023
A senior research delivery director has praised CRN South London’s business intelligence team for providing crucial data to support the setup and delivery of studies.
The business intelligence team provides analysis and presents research study recruitment and staff data to help the research system operate more effectively across south London.
Caroline Murphy, Director of Operations at the King’s Clinical Trials Unit (KCTU), has commented on the impact of business intelligence on the planning and performance of clinical trials. She said:
“Clinicians want to contribute to research studies, and the data available from CRN South London has immense value in planning clinical trials. There is a natural tendency toward optimism in research which can lead to unrealistic targets, particularly relating to the speed of site setup and recruitment of volunteers.

Delivering digital across NIHR - A busy year and lots planned
8 April 2022
As we begin a new financial year, I wanted to reflect on the progress of the Digital Strategy Implementation (DSI) Programme, to thank all colleagues involved and to share a snapshot of our plans ahead.
Please read and share our end of year programme summary and forward look “Building the NIHR’s Digital Future” which can be found in the full story linked below.
With contributions from colleagues across NIHR, we have delivered improvements against our objectives:
Accelerate end-to-end research: Started making our systems work with each other in order to reduce manual activity and speed up the flow of information to researchers
Increase awareness, recruitment and diversity in research: Recommended a national approach for the collection and sharing of equality, diversity and inclusion data to help inform whether research participants are fairly represented in targeted treatment groups
Improve engagement with research participants: Designed and started development of a service which enables research participants to register for and manage an account on Be Part of Research (BPOR)
Make it easier to track and value the impact of research: Agreed an approach for identifying a study throughout its life cycle so that data can be shared between organisations and systems and so that manual processes for researchers and staff can be reduced
Enable greater data sharing, value and insight: Recommended a tool that enables researchers to have an easy to use service for capturing research data
Improve organisational digital leadership and capabilities: We have started to drive coherence across the NIHR through the introduction of the DDaT Board, the Technical Design Authority and Service Design Forum
